Television footage and pictures in the print media are an obvious pointer to the government’s apathy towards Benazir’s security. The presence of an armed assassin and a suicide bomber within a few metres of her car exposes a huge chink in the security armour. The very tragic and shameful incident has definitely put President Musharraf, darling of George W. Bush, under the scanner.

Terror attack:
The terrorist attack is a reflection of the failure of our security system. The Centre and the State, instead of playing the blame game, should evolve a foolproof strategy to combat terrorism.
We should learn from the U.S. where there has been no major terrorist strike after 9/11. What terrorists need is an iron fist, not velvet gloves.

Politics on Migration:
The issue raised by Raj Thackeray — the heavy influx of immigrants into Mumbai — is a cause for concern but his intentions do not seem genuine. His move is aimed at broadening the MNS’ political base. It is unfortunate that some of our politicians build walls, instead of bridges, in society.

Naxalim:
Naxalism has spread its tentacles across the nation from the coasts of Andhra Pradesh to the fields of Bihar. And naxalites have succeeded in executing their mission from jails to jungles. By and large, the governments at the Centre and in the States have remained mute spectators to the aggressions. It is time something was done to curb the hydra-headed demon called naxalism.

Intolerance:
The suspension of the screening of Jodhaa Akbar by some State governments is unfortunate for a free society like India. It is true that one’s right to freedom of speech is not absolute. But it is also important for people to be tolerant. There is nothing in the movie that can be considered objectionable in a vibrant democracy.
We fought for our freedom of ideas and expression, and cinema is one of the main forms of expression.

Politricks:
The blooming friendship between Mr. Mulayam Singh and Mr. Kalyan Singh is a classic example of opportunistic politics. The saffron hero who scripted the demolition of the Babri Masjid cannot be forgiven just because he has owned responsibility for it after 16 years. The latest development has eroded ‘Maulana’ Mulayam’s stature as a secular leader. He has indeed made the task of his arch rival and U.P. Chief Minister Mayawati — of wooing the Muslim voters of the State — easier.

Justice delayed not denied:
Ms Kodnani’s resignation from the Modi government and her surrender before the Special Investigation Team is a victory for those who fought for social justice. Justice may be delayed, but it is not denied in our country.

Eulogy to YSR:
Dr. Reddy was a dynamic politician, able administrator, charismatic mass leader and efficient Chief Minister. He stood for the cause of the downtrodden and farmers. His decision to give free power to millions of poor and his government’s focus on irrigation projects will always be remembered. His death is a huge loss to India, in general, and Andhra Pradesh, in particular.
